Just wanted to update a story that has been consuming this country for well over the past couple of years yet seems to have disappeared from the headlines, but this country has passed a grim milestone of this COVID-19 pandemic. The CDC has officially reported that over one million people have died from this virus since the pandemic began in early 2020.
When this pandemic began in 2020, it rightfully freaked out much of the population and had them huddling inside to avoid transmission as much as possible, but TFG who could have and should have done everything he could to mitigate the spread instead went derelict on his duty and weaponized it as a political wedge issue. As a result, thousands of people who needed care succumbed prematurely to this disease while others began blowing it off and ended up dying unnecessarily. Even when vaccines became available to protect people from serious medical complications, it became a political divide among the MAGA crowd who refused to get vaccinated, and hundreds of thousands of people died or had their health permanently compromised unnecessarily as documented in Kos’ diaries on this subject. And with every mutation, new variants form which become harder to prevent transmission, and while it appears the more recent variants have not caused waves of severe illness compared to earlier variants (particularly among those who have been vaccinated), COVID itself has not gone away.
Yes, there is quite a bit of COVID fatigue going around the country, and while mask and distancing guidelines have been lifted, and people are going back out in public without a care in the world, the virus is still here. Sure, people have moved on to other issues like inflation, the war in Ukraine, and the sacking of abortion rights, but COVID could still mutate and come back even more deadly if we are not careful. But then again, the party of forced birth and the protection of “the unborn” certainly hasn’t shown the same passion in protecting people from contracting COVID, protecting voting rights, protecting the right of women to have control over their own bodies, and fighting against the fascist actions of a dictator who invaded a peaceful country who did not provoke any attack against them.
